The University of Ostrava (UO), with over 10,000 students, offers a very high quality level of education and research in the humanities, social and natural sciences, health studies, medicine and the fine arts. Its 6 faculties (Faculty of Science, Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Fine Arts, Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Social Studies, Pedagogical Faculty) offer an extremely wide range of fields of study as well as unconventional combinations of majors.

As well as being dynamic and intellectually challenging, UO also offers an international environment in which to study, with the university campus spread primarily throughout the old city centre, providing a stimulating environment to contemplate the living arts and sciences. Teaching at UO is research-driven, and its programmes are often taught by active researchers.

The university also proudly presents itself as a university full of leading figures in their fields of expertise who are not only scientists, but also inspirational and open-minded personalities with a vivid sense of creativity.

The small size of the university and its relative youth (founded in 1991) allows for a strongly individual approach to our students and flexible reactions to the needs of an up-to-date society and labour market. The university offers not only top quality education, but also many other possibilities for those who wish to fulfil their visions: whether it is the possibility to study other languages, found a student organisation, or gain other practical experience. The university actively searches for opportunities for students to raise their qualifications and help them kick off their careers.

At this point the University of Ostrava has established cooperation with several local organisations (such as a local studio of the public Czech Television) that provide students with valuable work experience. But the effort to offer more doesn’t only limit itself to our students and academicians. UO also puts emphasis on its 3rd role – after the first two roles – education and research – it is also an active player in the field of local social life and culture. UO and its faculties, student organisations and scientific institutes establish and promote hundreds of public events every year. These include free workshops, lectures, seminars, discussions, experiential events, scientific adventures, cultural festivals, charitable events, international gatherings, sports and cultural events, art exhibitions, happenings, alumni reunions, concerts, theatre plays, etc.

The university is simply an essential part of the city and its social life, and continues to cooperate with a steadily increasing number of cultural organisations and local institutions.

About the Czech Republic

Czech Republic is a landlocked country in Central Europe that borders the countries of Poland, Germany, Austria, and Slovakia. Often called a „Heart of Europe“, Czech Republic is strategically located along some of the oldest land routes in Europe, with the well-known „Amber Road“ from the Baltic sea to the civilization centres around the Mediterranean Sea. The geography of Czech Republic consists of beautiful rolling hills, deep forests and fertile plains. After a complicated history and a long time under communist regime, after the Velvet revolution the Czech Republic and its people have worked hard to become a country with highly-developed economy, proud on its rich cultural heritage and based on a robust democratic tradition. Culture, education and regional traditions as well as good humour and both nightlife (with the best beer in the world!) and outdoor adventures play an important role in Czech Republic.

Exchange Students

University of Ostrava offers various exchange opportunities both for domestic and international students as well as for academic and non-academic staff from all around the world.

If you are thinking about a mobility programme and would like to spend one or two semesters abroad try one of the two main study exchange options.
