State Higher Vocational School Capt. W. Pilecki in Oświęcim was founded in July 2005. Its creation was a joint initiative of self-government authorities of the Oświęcim poviat, the Małopolska province and the city of Oświęcim. The Jagiellonian University became the patron of the Academy of Higher Education in Oświęcim.
In 2005, the Association of Municipalities and Powiats of Małopolska awarded the State Higher Vocational School in Oświęcim with the title "Leader 2005" - the best undertaking in Małopolska in 2005. The European Commission awarded the Erasmus University Charter to the University of Oświęcim, which entitles PWSZ to participate in the Lifelong Learning Program. This means that students of the University of Oświęcim can study as part of the Erasmus program at foreign universities in Spain, Germany, Slovakia and the Czech Republic. State Higher Vocational School Captain Witold Pilecki in Oświęcim has two modern buildings: Collegium Primum put into use in 2005 and Collegium sub Horologio, whose adaptation under the Małopolska Regional Operational Program ended in 2010. The University Rector is located in the historic building of the first transport of Polish political prisoners to KL Auschwitz.
The university has: an air-conditioned auditorium for 300 people, 2 air-conditioned lecture halls for 100 people and rooms for 120, 60, 50, 45, 30 and 20 people. All rooms are equipped with modern multimedia equipment. The University operates a publishing house, a multimedia reading room and a library with an on-line catalog available for residents.
State Higher Vocational School Capt. W. Pilecki in Oświęcim is the organizer of many projects. He organizes and co-organizes international congresses, scientific conferences, discussion panels, film festival, Oxford debates, picnics, open days, and trainings.

Oświęcim is over 40,000 a city with an area of 30.3 km2, located on both banks of the Soła River, at its mouth to the Vistula, in the center of the Oświęcim Basin. It is adjacent to three important economic regions - the Upper Silesian Industrial District, the Kraków agglomeration and the Podbeskid region with the city of Bielsko-Biała at the forefront. This area is inhabited by about 5 million people. Focused here is the huge economic and scientific potential.
Oświęcim is close to well-known tourist destinations: Kraków, Wieliczka, Wadowice, Kalwaria Zebrzydowska and Pszczyna. In a short distance from the city there are very attractive areas of the Beskid Mały and Jura Krakowsko-Wieluńska.
The development of the city and strong administrative position for many years resulted in the establishment of important administrative units in its area. The City Hall, the Commune Office, the Poviat Office, the Tax Office, the Regional Office of the Provincial Statistical Office, the Fire Brigade, the Complex of Health Care Facilities, Emergency Service, Customs Post, District Court, District Prosecutor's Office and Poviat Police Headquarters, Marshal's Office of the Lesser Poland Voivodship have their seat here.
